Heart-centered counselling philosophy

My mission is to inspire people to mindfully and positively care for their body, mind, spirit, relationships, and the earth with loving kindness.

The heart is the emotional center of the body and spirit. My approach to heart-centered counselling is to help you re-learn how to listen to the deeper wisdom of your body to allow it to guide you through life's trauma and heartache to personal truth and authenticity. I utilize a mindful and intuitive approach, along with evidence-based knowledge, to assist you in accessing your inner wisdom and live a more full, authentic life.

Hakomi

Mindfulness-Based Therapy (Hakomi)

The Hakomi method of body centered psychotherapy was created by the internationally renowned therapist and author, Ron Kurtz, with assistance of a core group of his colleagues. Hakomi is based on the idea that much of our everyday suffering is unnecessary and produced by unconscious beliefs that are no longer relevant, true or necessary.

The Hakomi method is designed to bring such beliefs into consciousness, gently and efficiently. Once these beliefs are made conscious, they can be examined and modified to provide a more realistic and satisfying way of being. Angela has completed Module IV in Hakomi and is currently working towards certification.

Foundational Principles of Hakomi

Mindfulness
A receptive state that curious and non-judgmental; focused attention on what is happening internally in the present moment.

Nonviolence
Deep respect for the integrity, needs, strengths and limits of the other; change without force.

Organicity
Within each person is the natural impulse towards growth and change; we honor the inner wisdom that directs the process of healing and development.

Mind-Body Holism
The mind, body and spirit are an interwoven whole; the body reflects important information from the whole person.

Unity
We are all equal in worth; we impact one another; ultimately, we are all in this together.

Loving Presence
A calm, open-hearted and attentive state of emotional connection; finding contentment in being with another.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a method of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. Angela has completed EMDR Basic Training (Level II).

In the broadest sense, EMDR is intended to alleviate human suffering and assist individuals and human society to fulfill their potential for development while minimizing risks of harm in its application.

For the client, the aim of EMDR treatment is to achieve the most profound and comprehensive treatment effects in the shortest period of time, while maintaining client stability within a balanced family and social system.

EMDR is an approach to psychotherapy that is comprised of principles, procedures and protocols. It is not a simple technique, characterized primarily by the use of eye movements.

EMDR is founded on the premise that each person has both an innate tendency to move toward health and wholeness, and the inner capacity to achieve it. EMDR is grounded in psychological science and is informed by both psychological theory and research on the brain.

Scientific research has established EMDR as effective for post traumatic stress. However, clinicians also have reported success using EMDR in treatment of the following conditions:

• Eating Disorders & Addictions
• Body Dysmorphic Disorders & Pain Disorders
• Sexual and/or Physical Abuse
• Panic Attacks, Stress Reduction & Performance Anxiety
• Complicated Grief
• Dissociative Disorders & Personality Disorders
• Disturbing Memories & Phobias
